Kearse named MVP for all-star team

Ben Kearse set new records for three-pointers made and points scored in leading the Illinois boys to a 94-79 win over the Missouri boys at the McDonald's Herald-Whig Classic all-star game at Quincy University Saturday.

Kearse, a senior from Nauvoo-Colusa High School, hit 10 three-pointers in the game and scored a game-high 37 points. He had 16 points in the first half and finished 10-of-18 from the three-point line. He was named the Most Outstanding Player of the game.

Illinois tied the team record for three-pointers made with 12.

Garrett Janssen, a senior from South- eastern High School, scored four points and was one of two Illinois players to foul out. Fellow Southeastern player Tim Jefferson had two rebounds in the game.

It was the 20th straight win for the Illinois boys. They lead the all-time series 24-1.

The Illinois team was coached by Southeastern coach Bruce Bonness.

The Illinois girls lost to the Missouri girls 91-75. Missouri now leads the all-time series 16-10.

Ali Schwagmeyer, a senior from Central High School, scored a team-high 24 points. She was named the Illinois Most Outstanding Player.

Illini West graduate Randi Gronewold scored eight points. West Hancock players Emily Mast and Cassie Weigand scored three and two points, respectively.

The Illinois team was coached by West Hancock coach Ken Schuster.
