The LaHarpe city council heard about planned activities at the LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.
Administrator Athena Brooks told the council about upcoming events at the health care center. Next month, the center is holding a blood drive on Sept. 16, and is part of the Memory Walk in Macomb on Sept. 19.
A health fair is scheduled for Oct. 22. The fair includes several different types of screenings.
The day includes tours of six remodeled independent living apartments on the top floor. Three have already been remodeled. The price for the rooms includes three meals a day, all utilities, and other services. The rooms are staged with furniture to show what they can look like when fully furnished.
Food is also available that day.
The center plans to finish October by participating on trick-or-treat night.
A Wreath Walk takes place in November and December. The center is buying wreaths and giving them to individuals and businesses in LaHarpe to decorate. The decorated wreaths are to be returned to the center by Nov. 27, when the resident council votes on them. The wreaths will then be auctioned at a Christmas soup supper on Dec. 9. Proceeds go to St. Jude's Children Hospital. The center is hoping to have a concert by the LaHarpe Elementary School that day.
In other news, city attorney Dick Rasmussen said Monday night he had not received any bids for the vacant lot in the 100 block of Main Street. Bidders had until Tuesday (Aug. 11) to submit a bid on the property.
Police chief Justin Livingston said the city received about a dozen applications for the advertised part-time and full-time police officer positions. Six applications were selected for interviews being scheduled for this week. Livingston and police officer Larry Finch are helping to interview the candidates.
Livingston has quotes on a new 2009 Chevy Impala car and emergency lights for it. He is waiting for a quote from a radio company. The car will replace the Dodge police car, which is being traded in. The Impala and equipment for it will fit in the police depart-ment's budget for this year.
Treasurer Marcia Neff is checking on a fall clean-up date of Oct. 2.
Rasmussen okayed the wheelchair ramp at Dobson's Apartments if the owners provide proof of liability insurance. The ramp is being tried temporarily.
The council approved having the power company add more electrical hookups on the east end of Main Street so three more Christmas lights can be hung in that area.
Mayor Ken Brown asked if Neff could start providing a budget synopsis for each city department head periodically during each fiscal year. It would show each department head how much of their yearly budget was left and how much had been spent.
Brown thanked all the people who helped with the recent 11th annual Fred Gibb Memorial Car Show. Over 240 cars showed up on a rainy Saturday.
“We had a lot of cars for a rainy day,” said Brown. “We sold all the t-shirts, and we already have a pre-entry for next year.”
